Fateless Podcast Recap: Faith vs Speed — THIS Changes How You Build in Godforge

Each week, we share a direct update from the team behind Godforge, so you can see what we’re building, what’s changing, and why we’re making the calls we are. This week, Brad, Dirk, Nine, and UnboundSage sit down to break down one of the biggest system changes so far: the shift from Initiative to Faith, and how it reshapes Divinity, Ultimates, and overall combat.

This discussion goes beyond just explaining the change. It focuses on how the new system actually feels in gameplay, what problems it solves from alpha, and what new questions it introduces as we move toward beta. The previous Initiative system struggled to create meaningful impact or clarity, and in many cases was overshadowed by Speed. This update is designed to fix that by making Faith a clear, understandable driver of Ultimate generation.

One of the biggest shifts is how Divinity is now generated. Instead of relying on multiple overlapping systems, Faith directly determines how much Divinity a hero gains as turns progress across the battlefield. This makes Ultimate timing far more predictable, while also creating a new layer of decision-making around how players build their teams. Rather than defaulting to Speed, players now have to consider whether they want faster turns or faster access to Ultimates.

The conversation also highlights why Divinity generators were removed for now. While they added complexity, they often undermined the value of building into the stat system itself. By simplifying the system and allowing Faith to stand on its own, the goal is to create something that is easier to understand but still offers depth through optimization and team composition.

At the same time, there are clear balance questions. Early impressions suggest Ultimates may be happening too frequently, especially in boss encounters, and tuning will be needed. This is exactly the kind of feedback the team is looking for during beta, where systems like this can be tested at scale and refined based on real player behavior.

We’re moving toward a system where Faith can genuinely compete with Speed, opening up more build diversity and more strategic choices in combat. Beta will be the proving ground for whether that balance feels right.
